Lulu: Go and learn from other businesses before even thinking about setting up on your own. LPA: What advice would you give to anyone hoping to make it in the fashion industry? Don’t be afraid to look different and remember that when it comes to fashion, there really are no rules! I think that the key to good personal style is having a sense of humour and letting that come out through the clothes you wear. Lulu: I absolutely love the way Londoners dress and think that is is their individuality that makes them so uniquely stylish. LPA: In your opinion, what is the key to personal style? On top of that we have a new shop opening up in Burlington Arcade which is a fantastic location so that’s something we’re really looking forward to as well.

We’re introducing the Lulu Guinness luggage range in August which is very exciting as it’s the first time we’ll have ever done it. I don’t know where to begin! I literally got in from Hong Kong yesterday evening and we have so many things going on that there is never a dull moment. LPA: What has Lulu Guinness got in store for us next season?

I wanted to do something interactive which would encourage people to get involved and have a bit of fun and it dawned on me that it would be great to do a lifesize version so that visitors could make full body-sized portraits. They reminded me of those pin toys children have. Lulu: The installation was inspired by the studded bags in my AW11 collection. LPA: How did you come up with the idea for your “Be a Pin Up” installation? Luckily it was a fairly intimate affair so I managed to wangle a sneaky interview with London’s queen of accessories… The installation certainly brought out the inner 6 year old in all of us and we spent a happy couple of hours pressing ourselves against the installation and then subtly adjusting the pins to make our self-portrait that little bit more flattering… bigger boobs, smaller waist, you know the drill… Remember those pin toys (do they have an actual name?) you had endless fun making images of your hands and face with when you were little? Well imagine that, but BIGGER. “Be a Pin Up” is a lifesize creation that allows readers to make full body sized self-portraits or anything else that takes their fancy. As an accessory designer, Lulu’s handbags are second to none but for this particular project, she had to do something a little different. Lulu Guinness has to be one of THE quintessential British designers so it is hardly surprising that she was approached to create a one-of-a-kind installation to be displayed at London’s foremost celebration of design. But I soon got over it, ordered myself an extra large latte and began bombarding poor old Lulu with endless questions about anything and everything I could think of. As we sipped coffee in the uber chic Zetter Hotel with the legendary designer herself I have to admit that I did have a slight “how-is-this-my-life” moment. As I mentioned (ok, shamelessly boasted about) in my previous post, I was recently invited along to an exclusive bloggers brunch hosted by Lulu Guinness to give us the inside scoop on her unique installation for Clerkenwell Design Week.
